Didgeridoo Educational Workshop: One Session

Learning Intentions: Aims and Objectives

To appreciate and learn about the culture of indigenous native Australians.

To appreciate the culture of the oldest continuous culture in the world.

To focus pupils on rhythm styles of different cultures.

Allow pupils to explore the difference between Western and traditional indigenous Australian Music.
Activities

Nick introduces himself and describes how he started playing the didgeridoo, briefly touches on his travels and experiences living amongst indigenous aboriginal peoples.

Demonstration of playing.

Introduction

Start with educational and informative video/DVD featuring an aboriginal friend of Nick, David Hudson. DVD takes the viewer to the exotic Cape York Peninsular in Northern Australia, where he selects a tree, strips and paints a didgeridoo.

Pupils are given PVC didgeridoos with everyone (including teachers) being encouraged to have a go at playing! Nick demonstrates the basic techniques which the pupils imitate and copy.

The last part of the workshop is spent discussing aboriginal culture and customs, e.g. how they live, how they get their food, the different flora, fauna and animals in Australia etc.
